The D’Entrecasteaux Islands, near the southeast
coast of the island of
New Guinea, consist of
Fergusson (Kaluwawa),
Goodenough (Morata),
Normanby (Duau), and
Sanaroa islands, and a number of islets. The islands are
mountainous, with extinct
volcanoes and hot
springs. Coconuts are grown on the islands. The group was named after the French admiral and explorer Bruni d’Entrecasteaux, who explored the islands in the early 1790s.
